The Travel Expert’s Guide to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Guide

Although a small island in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico does it better! Not lacking in its experiences, it’s bound to flabbergast you. While you discover unique adventures, history, culture, beaches, nightlife and sports, the contrasts are awe-inspiring. Featuring a mountainous landscape, it is in Puerto Rico that you can find one of world’s longest zip-lines. Or you can paddle through one of the most romantic places on earth – the Bioluminescent Bay of Vieques. The historic towns of San Juan and Ponce, the sparkling beaches and the tropical rainforests are only some of the reasons why it’s a great destination for your next family vacation. Any which way you are sure to be dazzled.

It is only a 2 hour flight from continental US, and does not require a US passport to visit. What a pleasure, that means no customs and no immigration to worry about if you are a US citizen. Other perks include being able to use US currency, and US mobile carriers.

When should you go: December to June is the peak travel period and good time to avoid the hurricane season. But even from June to Dec, it is not common for the storms to make landfall.  You will see less crowds and more promotional hotel rates. December to April is the dry season and August can be hot, rainy and humid.

Why should you go?   An easy destination with no passport required for US citizens.

Stay in Condado beach area if you like to be active after dark, or enjoy shopping at luxury boutiques, or a fine dining experience. Many beachfront casino resorts and late night hotspots make this a popular area to stay.

Isla Verde houses many of the city’s luxury resort hotels facing Isla Verde beach, where golden sand meets azure waters of the Atlantic, perfect for families who are seeking a relaxing beach vacation.

Old San Juan also has a few small charming hotels and large hotels with casinos.  Stay here if you want to be close to the historical center and its beautiful forts, colonial style cathedrals, brightly colored buildings and souvenir shops.

Throughout the island outside the metropolitan city of San Juan, there are also small bed and breakfast inns called paradores, operated by Puerto Rican families.  They are ideal for those travelers who enjoy local customs and charm and traditional Puerto Rican cuisine and hospitality.

How to get around: You can take a cab.  But if you plan to do a lot of tours, a rental car is recommended.
